On
the 20th –31st July 2009 (in partnership with the Royal Borough
of Kensington and Chelsea Summer Uni4U; the Horniman Museum, Lewisham;
The Petrie Museum, University of London and the British Museum) Response
Community Projects presented a two-week programme for 8-19 year olds
entitled “Great African Politicians”.
During
the project 20 young people had the opportunity to learn about the impact
African politicians have had on the world. From as far back as the great
ancient Egyptian warrior Pharaoh Ramose; the young king Tutankhamun;
Pharaoh Akhenaten; Queen Nefertiti; Martin Luther King; King Shaka;
Nelson Mandela to our current President Obama; their people, their culture
and their contribution to the political world stage. These young people
were also given the opportunity to do research on their own families’
culture and their ancestors so that they could find out more about their
roots.
Incorporating writing skills, Art; It Skills, photo-shop, Black History
workshops, discussions, Museum visits, presentations, DVds and a showcase
exhibition, young people were able to gain a greater knowledge of African
History; African Culture; Africa’s contribution to the world of
politics and about their ancestral history. They also learnt how museums
and exhibitions can be used as a successful research and learning tool;
how to research on the World Wide Web; and how to use photo-shop and
digital photographs
All the
young people that attended and the staff that worked on the project
had a lot of fun and a great learning time. Thank you to RBKC and The
Hilden Trust for their financial support and many thanks to the staff
at the Horniman and the Petrie Museum for finding the time to accommodate
us.
