Jasmine
We have chosen this because Daska had a baby in June and
she called it Yasmine. Jasmine is a climbing shrub that
flowers in midsummer. The flowers are white and shaped like
stars and the buds are pink and shaped like little tubes.
Sometimes, on hot nights, the whole of Earls Court is filled
with the sweet perfume of Jasmine. Jasmine means “amiable”
and everybody loves it so we think it is a good choice of
name.

Rose
This is an ugly name for a pretty flower, our native wild
rose. We found it in the Brompton cemetery. But though it
is pretty and smells sweet, it only flowers for a few days
in June and it is protected by sharp thorns. For this reason,
it is the symbol of young love - causing pleasure and pain
and only lasting for a short time. It turns up in love poetry,
as in: “Gather ye roses while ye may, Rheumatism
may set in any day.”
(Robert Herrick wrote the first line but
we can’t vouch for the second line - ed.)
